I’m no expert with tablets, but I know a lot of users want to use them with the GIMP. I’m collecting information on how to do this here on this page. Feel free to contact me if you have additional information you’d like to share.

Using a Wacom Tablet
There are many versions of this tablet but they all (apparently) are supported by the same drivers.

Using an Aiptek Tablet
The Aiptek tablets only come in a few flavors. I had an Aiptek 12000U. I did a little research on using the tablet while writing an article for Linux Format magazine.

Tablets with GIMP on MacOS X
It appears that these work with the MacOS X X11 application, but at the time I researched this it didn’t support pressure sensitivity. See this message for details.
